In high school and college I always loved my Literature classes. They fascinated me. I give all the credit to my high school English teacher, Ms. Jarma, who made it exciting and interesting and enjoyable and who really helped us connect with the stories and poems we read. In college, though I quickly sold every other college textbook, I always held on to my Lit books. I just couldn't bear to part with a book so full of stories and thoughts collected over centuries. There's a lot of literature I don't care for, but the pieces that I love, I truly love.
Yesterday I found a file on my computer that had a small collection of my favorite poems, so I thought I'd post one now and again. The following poem is my favorite of all time. And if you know e.e. cummings at all, you'll know that I didn't botch the punctuation, spacing, and capitalization... that's just the way he does things. Enjoy!
i carry your heart with me
by e.e. cummings
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
