The Lost Art of Letter Writing
I have this fascination with old postcards. Every time I go to an antique shop, I love looking at them. I'll sit there forever thumbing through them to find the ones with writing on the back, and then I read them. It's so interesting to see the things that they wrote about. It was a different time, and I suppose I'm fascinated by these letters and postcards for the same reason that I am fascinated by photography. They are moments, thoughts, and feelings captured in time.
As those of you who know me well can attest to, I am not good the phone or keeping up with people. (I'm working on it!) But over the past year or two I have reconnected with one of my best friends back home, Ashley, and we decided to re-discover the lost art of letter writing. So far, we've only been doing it for a few months, but it's so much fun! I just love checking the mail and finding a real letter amongst all the bills. AND we're finding that we're learning new things about each other through our letters. It's a lot of fun, and I'm thinking about expanding my pen pal list to include others (like my grandparents, perhaps). When was the last time you wrote a letter?

I love this so much Bre! I really want to be better at this. I remember when I was in college Galen was really good about writing me letters. I LOVED going to my mailbox and seeing his handwriting on a letter! :) I am going to make it my goal to write to my grandmas this week. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I wrote real letters was last summer. Amanda & I exchanged letters as a way to support each other through long hot summer months. It was awesome. Then, we both got pregnant, and the letter-writing had to stop. It does improve relationships! There is true community shared in the written word!
ReplyDeletep.s. That was me, Dawn, in the previous comment. Somehow my husband was logged in on my computer.
